We offer some of the cheapest shipping to South Africa for international packages.

Home to over 52 million people South Africa sits at the most southerly tip of the African continent and is considered to be the largest economic force in the region. South Africa both produces and consumes vast amounts of energy, and the nation is also a mecca for tourism, with vast natural resources and beautiful landscapes. South Africa does have an active trade agreement with the European Union, which offers distinct benefits when sending a parcel from EU member states to South Africa. The upper-middle income economy is quite advanced, but despite this retailers were originally sceptical about whether e-commerce would ever become a big thing in South Africa, because of the high barrier of entry but today e-commerce is booming. With the abundance of choice online, consumers have become more demanding and will look to overseas markets and foreign sellers if the price is correct, and the shipping is available.

Take note of the important Customs Information when sending a parcel to South Africa

Standard regulations for sending to South Africa mean the following information must be provided on customs documents for parcels being shipped to South Africa. A South African personal identification number is a 13-digit number containing only numeric characters, and no whitespace, punctuation, or alpha characters. It is defined as YYMMDDSSSSCAZ:YYMMDD represents the date of birth (DoB )SSSS is a sequence number registered with the same birth date (where females are assigned sequential numbers in the range 0000 to 4999 and males from 5000 to 9999) C is the citizenship with 0 if the person is a SA citizen, 1 if the person is a permanent resident A is 8 or 9. Prior to 1994 this number was used to indicate the holder's race Z is a checksum digit. Using ID Number 8001015009087 as an example, it would read as follows: The ID indicates that a male citizen was born on 1 January 1980; he was the 10th male to be registered (assuming that the first male to be registered on that day would be assigned the sequence number 5000). If the recipient is not a SA resident their national insurance number or alternatively their passport number will be required.

When sending parcels to South Africa it is important to provide a South African personal identification number on the customs invoice so customs can review where the parcel is going to and can also collect payment of any customs duty more easily. Consumers, the majority of whom are women aged between 18 to 39, in cities such as Cape Town and Johannesburg are ordering goods from abroad frequently and often want to track the parcel to delivery, which is something we can provide, should you place an order on our global shipping marketplace. eCommerce may not be the only reason you need to send a parcel to South Africa for, gifts are sent, whilst expats may need to be able to ship parcels home. Parcel volume increases for cultural celebrations plus there is an endless list of common reasons for sending goods to this vast and impressive country.

Customs Information

South Africa has strict rules regarding the dumping of goods into the country by commercial organisations. As such you are likely to need a Declaration of Origin form (DA 59) and attach it to your shipment. You are allowed a 400.00 Rand value of individual to individual goods before duties are applicable but you will need to write 'gift shipment' on the packaging to expedite the process of customs clearance. If you import more than three times a year into South Africa you will need an importers code.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do you offer door to door delivery?

The Parcel Monkey marketplace uses a shipping calculator to find the best prices for shipping your items door to door via a range of different couriers.

With full tracking on almost all of our delivery services, you can follow your package from the moment it leaves you until it arrives with the recipient. We always advise providing the contact number of the recipient so that if needed, the courier can contact them to resolve any issues with the delivery.

Some of our courier services are delivered to a local Post Office, where the recipient will need to collect the package from such as with DHL eCommerce to some remote areas so it is essential to provide a working contact number. Items shipped with Parcel Monkey are also done so DDU, so it might be that Customs need to collect payment from the recipient before delivery. We offer Customs Advice to help with the completion of any Customs Documents.

If you want to know more about what a courier is and how to choose the best service for your package, we can help.

  • Can I add protection cover to my order?

When you place an order via the Parcel Monkey marketplace, during the booking process you can add protection cover to your item. As long as your item is not prohibited, has been packaged properly and you follow our Claims Procedure, you will be protected should your item be lost or damaged.

Some of our services offer no protection cover, but others do and some even offer free cover up to a certain value. You can view this information when you get a price via our shipping calculator.

Please ensure that the item is not on the prohibited items list as this will make it void.

It is also vital to remember your package is going to be sent with global carriers, likely to be handled in various customs and airport departments so be sure to package the item correctly so it is well protected and cannot move around in the box.

  • How long will it take for my package to be delivered?

Before you choose how to send your package, consider how quickly you need it to arrive. Transit times depend on two key factors- the shipping destination and the courier service you choose from the Parcel Monkey marketplace.

When choosing a courier from our marketplace, we will display an estimated delivery time, provided by the couriers themselves as they handle the goods.

You can see how long it will take to arrive with the receiver and we advise that you share this tracking with the recipient so they can see when it is set to arrive. Always provide the recipient contact number when you book in case the delivery courier needs to contact them.

You can choose slower economy services such as DHL eCommerce if looking to save on the cost, or you can choose a speedy Express service that gets the package delivered more quickly like our 2-5 day International Drop Off service provided by FedEx, also available as a Pickup.
